The Mt Piper Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a utility-scale battery project being developed to strengthen the reliability and resilience of the electricity network in New South Wales.

Located near the existing Mt Piper Power Station, the grid-connected battery will store electricity when supply is high — including during periods of strong renewable generation — and dispatch it back to the grid when demand increases or supply is constrained.

What the project will do

Mt Piper BESS will play a key role in supporting the energy transition by:

  • Improving grid stability and reliability
  • Supporting increased renewable energy integration
  • Helping manage peak electricity demand
  • Responding rapidly to fluctuations in supply and demand
  • Enhancing the overall resilience of the power system

Battery energy storage systems can respond almost instantly to changes in the grid, providing services that help maintain a stable and consistent electricity supply for households and businesses.

Project infrastructure

The Mt Piper BESS will include:

  • Battery storage units housed within purposebuilt enclosures
  • Power conversion equipment to manage electricity flows to and from the grid
  • Electrical infrastructure connecting the battery to the existing transmission network
  • Safety, cooling and fire protection systems designed to meet Australian standards
  • The project has been carefully sited to leverage existing energy infrastructure while minimising environmental and visual impacts.

Construction and operations

Construction of the Mt Piper BESS will occur over a defined period and is expected to create local employment opportunities and contracting work for the region. Activities will be managed in accordance with approved environmental and safety requirements, with measures in place to minimise traffic, noise and other potential impacts.

Once operational, the facility will operate with a small onsite workforce and be monitored 24/7 using advanced control and safety systems.

Community and environment

Engagement with the local community is a key part of the Mt Piper BESS project. The project team is committed to open communication, early consultation and ongoing engagement throughout development, construction and operation.

Environmental considerations have informed all stages of project design, with a focus on avoiding and minimising impacts, managing risks, and complying with all relevant planning and environmental approvals.

Supporting New South Wales’ energy future

Mt Piper BESS represents a significant investment in energy infrastructure that will support New South Wales as it transitions to a cleaner, more flexible electricity system. By storing and dispatching energy when it is most needed, the project will help deliver secure, affordable and sustainable electricity now and into the future.
